The Story of the Beacon Hill Paver Patio

Not long ago, Big Bend Landscaping built a Beacon Hill paver patio for a St. Louis family who’d just added a new room to their home.

Adding a new addition to your home presents an opportunity to re-imagine your outdoor living space too. This is especially true if your addition comes with a new back door! Maybe you’re picturing a new patio? Or flower beds with hardscaped paths? Or perhaps an outdoor kitchen?

Do you live in the St. Louis area and are wondering who can turn your picture into a reality? Big Bend Landscaping can! Take a look at what we did for this client!

The Picture

The homeowners had just completed a new addition to their home. So, they decided it was a great time to redesign their back yard too. They reached out to Big Bend Landscaping and asked us to meet with them.

This family wanted a paver patio where some members could spend summer evenings watching while others practiced their golf game in the large green space nearby. They wanted to separate this outdoor living space from their nearby driveway while still providing a clear path from the drive to the back door.

These customers preferred a clean, contemporary look with straight lines and clear borders. The sort of pavers they wanted would be textured, but modern-looking.

Could Big Bend Landscaping do the work? Yes, we could!

The Plans

As always, Big Bend Landscaping asked a lot of questions and listened carefully to the answers. We took a number of pictures, measured all the spaces in question, and showed them a variety of materials that would fit their needs.

Big Bend Landscaping believes our customers deserve the best! That’s why we only work with the highest quality materials. Unilock Pavers is on the short list that meets our high standards. Some of the others are Belgard, BP, Pavestone, Keystone, Versa-Lok and Anchor.

The client chose the new Unilock Beacon Hill XL pavers with a Unilock Copthorne sailor course for their Beacon Hill paver patio. They agreed that a seating wall would be a great way to separate their patio from their driveway. They also wanted a matching pathway from their backdoor to their driveway and garage. This required some ingenuity, but Big Bend Landscaping was happy to tackle the challenge. As a finishing touch, they requested we leave room for beds to add shrubs to in the future.

Before we began, we showed them 3D images of what the space would look like to make sure we were giving them exactly what they imagined. They were satisfied and we set a date to come out.

Bringing it to Life

The First Stages

Big Bend Landscaping crews are punctual, orderly, and clean. As always, we brought all the necessary tools and materials to complete the job and arrived early on the agreed-upon date.

There is no stage of this process that is not important, so we take great care to ensure that every detail is perfect. We cleared the area, excavated the space for the patio, seating wall, beds for shrubs, and pathway, carefully leveling and squaring every inch.

These details are extremely important. If we don’t pay attention to the small things, sooner or later, the homeowner will know it. And we want to be invited back because they were happy, not because a paver is loose or the seating wall is leaning.

Once we’ve confirmed that the excavation is perfect, we add the porous base and press it into place, taking care to make sure it is absolutely level. The base ensures good drainage and a solid foundation. We then add a layer of sand that keeps the pavers from shifting, adding edge restraints to further secure them.

Laying the Beacon Hill Pavers

Then we finally began the process of laying in the pavers and the border (sailor course). After discussing it with the homeowners, everyone agreed on a design element. The best way to differentiate the path to the driveway from the patio itself was to switch the direction of the pavers. We also agreed that using the Copthorne sailor course borders to separate them was a good idea. When we’d completed laying the pavers, we dusted them with a thin layer of dust and ran a plate compactor over them to make sure they were firmly set in place.

We then constructed the seating wall using interlocking pavers held in place with special pins and topped it off with a matching cap. And finally, we added black granite decorative rock to each of the beds that bordered the patio, walkway, and seating wall.

When we finished, we cleaned up the entire site, disposing of any resulting construction debris or trash. When the homeowner comes to see the brand-new finished project, we want them to see it in all its new glory.

Making it Real

The homeowners were extremely pleased with the Beacon Hill paver patio we build for them. The finished result was a well-balanced use of space that allowed for room to enjoy their outdoor living space, the hardscaped path, and the beds, all accentuating the beauty of their new addition. They can now spend time together on the patio on cool summer evenings, cheering on the members who are enjoying their favorite sport.

We guarantee our work and if there are any unforeseen issues, we will stand behind it. But we fully expect this family to enjoy their patio for years to come!
